Letter, 1889 June 13, On the Train [California] [to] Mr, Fischer / C.E. [Charles Edwin] Markham. 1889.

Markham indicates that he will call Fischer tomorrow in reference to the principalship of the Hawywards School. He also states that he is traveling by train to San Francisco and that he could be reached care of the History Company, San Francisco.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
